Onkyo Muse Y-50 – Compact streaming amplifier with a focus on space and balance
The Muse Y-50 from Onkyo is the flagship model in the Muse series, designed as a fully integrated 2-channel solution with high power, network streaming, and AV integration. The unit uses a fully digital signal design combined with an Axign Class D amplifier with a MOSFET output stage, delivering up to 250W at 4 ohms. It combines high power, flexible connectivity, and modern streaming in a solution that is both technically accomplished and easy to integrate into everyday life.
It’s an amplifier that doesn’t just look good on paper – it also feels like a piece of well-balanced hi-fi once you start using it.

AMPLIFIER DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE
At its core is still an Axign-based Class D amplifier with a MOSFET output stage, but here there is more to work with. With up to 250 watts at 4 ohms and 150 watts at 8 ohms, there is noticeably more headroom, and you can hear it.
The Y-50 has a different sense of calm when you play loudly or drive larger speakers. It never loses its grip, and it never feels strained – not even when the bass gets heavy or the music becomes complex. This results in a more relaxed and authoritative presentation, where the dynamics are free to unfold without limitations.
THE SOUND IN PRACTICE
There is a clear family resemblance in the sound compared to the Y-40, but the Y-50 feels bigger in its presentation. Not just louder – but fuller and more stable.
The low end reaches deeper and carries more weight, while control remains intact. The midrange is open and natural, and there is plenty of space around the instruments, so the soundstage never feels crowded. It is especially at slightly higher volume levels that the difference really stands out – where smaller amplifiers begin to compress, the Y-50 continues to maintain its structure.
It is still a relatively neutral amplifier, but with enough body and energy to make the music feel alive.
STREAMING AND SIGNAL PATH
The streaming experience is the same well-executed solution as on the Y-40. You get direct integration with Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and Qobuz, so the music streams directly to the amplifier without going through your phone.
This provides a stable experience and a clean signal path, avoiding unnecessary conversions. AirPlay 2 and Google Cast make it easy to integrate into everyday life regardless of platform, while Bluetooth is there as a quick solution – though primarily for convenience rather than optimal sound quality.
CONNECTIONS AND EXTRA FEATURES
This is especially where the Y-50 starts to set itself apart.
You still get HDMI ARC for TV, analog inputs, and digital coax, but additional layers have been added on top. The phono input supports both MM and MC, giving you much greater flexibility if you care about vinyl. In addition, a dedicated subwoofer output has been added, making it easier to integrate a sub into the setup.
There is also an extra HDMI input, and the speaker terminals are of better quality, which may sound like a small thing – but in practice it is nice if you use proper cables and want a solid connection.
ROOM COREECTION AND FINE-TUNING
One of the features that really makes the Y-50 interesting is Onkyo Room Correction.
Here you have the option to tailor the sound to your room, which often makes a bigger difference than the equipment itself. The system can be used via an app, and depending on whether you use iOS or Android, you can either use the built-in microphone or add an external one.
It is not something everyone will use – but for those who do, it opens the door to significantly better integration between speakers and room.
DESIGN AND USER EXPERIENCE
The form factor is still compact, and the Y-50 takes up no more space than to fit naturally into most homes. The look is simple and modern without becoming anonymous.
The front panel’s 5.46” color LCD provides a clear overview of playback, and the analog VU meter is still included. It is a small detail, but one of those touches that makes the product feel a little more alive in daily use.
Operation works both directly on the unit and via the Onkyo Controller app, making it easy to control both music and settings without hassle.
POSITIONING
The Onkyo Muse Y-50 is basically the Y-40 with more of everything – more power, more options, and better adaptation to both speakers and room.
It is still compact and user-friendly, but it plays in a different league when it comes to control and ease. If you have speakers that deserve a little extra, or simply want a setup that will not run out of power, then the Y-50 makes a lot of sense.
It is not an amplifier that draws attention to itself – but it is one that delivers when it matters.
