Onkyo Muse Y-40 – Compact streaming amplifier with a firm grip on the details
There are many compact streaming amplifiers, but very few strike the balance between technology, sound, and ease of use just right. The Onkyo Muse Y-40 is one of those models that quickly gives you the sense that the fundamentals are well under control. This is not an amplifier that tries to impress with flashy features. Instead, it feels like a thoughtfully designed piece of hi-fi where everything just works – both technically and sonically.
You get an Axign-based Class D amplifier with a MOSFET output stage, which is not just about efficiency, but about control. And you can hear it - especially in the low end, where many small amplifiers otherwise lose their grip.

AMPLIFIER DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE
Under the hood is an Axign-based Class D amplifier with a MOSFET output stage. That makes a real difference in practice. You get an efficient amplifier with high current capacity and low distortion – and most importantly: good control over the speakers.
With up to 150 watts at 4 ohms, there is plenty of headroom, and the Y-40 never feels strained when the music becomes demanding. It stays composed, even when a lot is happening in the soundstage, and that is where it sets itself apart from many smaller alternatives.
THE SOUND EXPERIENCE IN PRACTICE
The first thing you notice is the control in the low end. The bass is tight and precise without becoming heavy or muddy, and that provides a solid foundation for the rest of the soundstage. At the same time, vocals are stable and natural, while there is good air and separation between the instruments.
Class D can sometimes sound a little flat or clinical, but here the balance has been carefully worked on. The Y-40 sounds neutral and clean, but still with enough musicality to keep it from becoming dull. Transients are fast, and there is a nice sense of dynamics without tipping into harshness. In other words, it hits a real sweet spot.
STREAMING AND SIGNAL PATH
Fortunately, the streaming section is not just an add-on for appearances. With support for Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and Qobuz, music is streamed directly to the amplifier, which provides a more stable experience and a cleaner signal path.
AirPlay 2 and Google Cast make integration easy, whether you are in the Apple or Android ecosystem. Bluetooth is also available, but it is clear that it is primarily intended as a practical solution – not the optimal one in terms of sound quality.
ANALOG AND DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY
Muse Y-40 offers three analog RCA inputs, a coaxial digital input, as well as a dedicated MM phono input for turntables. This makes the unit compatible with both modern digital sources and classic analog signal sources.
CONNECTIONS AND FLEXIBILITY
The Onkyo Y-40 is built to serve as the center of a modern setup. HDMI ARC makes it an obvious match for your TV, where you get a significant upgrade in sound quality without complicating the installation.
In addition, there are analog RCA inputs, a coaxial digital input, and a built-in phono MM input, so you can connect everything from a turntable to digital sources directly. The combination of Wi-Fi and Ethernet also provides flexibility when it comes to network setup.
DESIGN AND USER EXPERIENCE
With a width of 35 cm, the Y-40 is easy to integrate into most homes without taking up unnecessary space. The design is simple and modern, but with small details that give it character.
The large color LCD on the front is not just for show – it provides a clear overview of playback, and the built-in VU meter adds a classic hi-fi feel that many will appreciate. It is one of those details you do not need, but that still makes the experience better.
Operation works both directly on the unit and via the Onkyo Controller app, where you can quickly control music, inputs, and settings.
