Meze Audio 109 PRO – A tribute to music
Meze 109 PRO is created as a tribute to what music really is: emotion, presence, and memories. It is developed for the listener who does not just want to hear details, but to feel the music as a living, organic experience. From the very first lines on the drawing board, the goal has been to create headphones that invite immersion – a pair you put on, forget you are wearing, and simply disappear into your favorite album with.
Every part of the 109 PRO has been selected and engineered with the purpose of supporting this experience. Materials such as walnut wood, cast zinc, manganese steel, and vegan leather are combined in a lightweight yet robust construction that feels every bit as refined as it sounds.
Highlights
• 50 mm dynamic driver developed for speed, precision, and wide dynamic headroom
• W-shaped dome in carbon-fiber-reinforced cellulose for high resolution and low resonance
• Ultra-thin torus with beryllium coating for fast response and a neutral character
• Open-back construction with maximum transparency and air
• Black walnut wood in the earcups for natural tonality and an exclusive look
• Velour pads and self-adjusting headband for long-lasting comfort
• Easy to drive from both portable devices and desktop setups
• Fully serviceable construction for long lifespan and sustainability
A dynamic driver with high-end ambitions
At a time when planar technology gets a lot of attention, Meze has chosen with the 109 PRO to dive deep into the dynamic principle – and to do it at a level where the driver feels just as sophisticated as in far more expensive designs. The large 50 mm dynamic driver is assembled and tuned with great precision to combine speed, clarity, and a wide dynamic range.
The driver dome is shaped in a W profile and made from a carbon-fiber-reinforced cellulose composite. This combination provides both low mass and increased stiffness, which is essential for reproducing high frequencies with clarity and without harshness. By keeping resonances under control, it avoids the distortion and sharpness that often plague conventional dynamic drivers.
Surrounding the dome is an ultra-thin torus made from a semi-crystalline polymer material, beryllium-coated through a PVD process. The layer is only 22 microns thick, but provides significantly increased stiffness and better damping, allowing the driver to respond extremely quickly without “ringing” afterward. The precisely shaped corrugations in the torus, cut at a carefully calculated angle, contribute both strength and additional damping of unwanted movement.
Everything is mounted in a CNC-milled aluminum frame, which provides perfect flatness, thermal stability, and mechanical control. A copper-zinc alloy stabilizer around the diaphragm absorbs micro-vibrations and further reduces distortion. Overall, the driver is a piece of highly refined mechanical and acoustic engineering, packaged inside headphones under 1,000 dollars.
A revealing sound
The sound signature of the 109 PRO is tuned to be both musical and revealing. It has a lively and dynamic character that makes drum hits, strings, guitars, and voices feel present and full of energy. The midrange is rich and natural, with vocal reproduction that feels intimate and realistic. The treble range is detailed and open, yet controlled, so you avoid fatigue during long listening sessions.
The open-back construction contributes to a spacious and airy presentation, where the music does not feel confined, but rather unfolds in front of the listener. The combination of openness, fast transient response, and precise driver control delivers stereo imaging with good depth, accurate placement, and a sense of genuine acoustic space.
Acoustic design focused on air and anatomy
The inside of the earcup is designed with a spiderweb-like structure and an acoustically transparent grille that exposes the driver from both sides. It is Meze’s most open pattern to date and is developed to minimize reflections and create as free an airflow as possible around the diaphragm.
The driver is positioned at a carefully calculated distance and angle relative to the ear, based on anthropometric principles. This means the sound reaches the ear in a way that better matches how we naturally perceive sound sources in space. This helps with imaging, focus, and the overall sense of realism.
The velour pads surround the ear softly and create a seal that is balanced enough to support the bass, while also being more open and breathable than leather. This limits heat buildup and sweat, making the 109 PRO particularly well suited to long sessions.
The headphones that “disappear”
Meze has carried over its experience from the 99 Classics and other models to the wearing comfort of the 109 PRO. The self-adjusting headband distributes weight evenly and automatically adapts to different head shapes and sizes. The combination of low weight, flexible headband construction, and soft, ventilated pads makes the headphones quickly “disappear” physically, allowing your full attention to remain on the music.
A clear Meze signature
The earcups are turned from black walnut wood, which contributes both to the visual identity and supports the natural, organic tonality. The wood is combined with cast zinc, manganese steel, and vegan leather, creating a look and feel that is every bit as tactile and solid as Meze’s other models.
The design is not only beautiful, but also functional. Every component is developed to withstand daily use and many years of listening without losing stiffness, adjustability, or comfort.
Sustainability through longevity
In line with Meze’s philosophy, the 109 PRO is built to last – and to be repairable. All essential parts can be taken apart and serviced if needed, from ear pads and cable to the headband, brackets, and driver. By prioritizing long lifespan and serviceability, the need to replace the entire product is reduced, and with it the overall environmental impact.
The 109 PRO is therefore not only a strong sonic investment, but also a product designed as part of a more responsible approach to consumption and ownership.
