JBL Project K2 S9900 – high-end with dynamics and presence

JBL Project K2 S9900 is for the dedicated music lover who wants a high-end floorstanding speaker with powerful dynamics and an ear for music’s fine details. It combines a 15-inch woofer with horn-loaded compression drivers and is aimed at those who prioritize presence, precision, and an engaging soundstage in their stereo system. 

The model continues JBL’s Project K2 tradition and is built on key design principles from Project Everest. Here, magnesium and beryllium diaphragms, a powerful woofer, and a thoroughly engineered cabinet come together in a design where each frequency section has its own crossover. 

15-inch woofer with Alnico magnet

The foundation of the JBL Project K2 S9900 is a 15-inch woofer with a paper cone, Alnico magnet, and a 100 mm voice coil. The complete motor structure weighs 16 kg and is supported by a cast frame. The design has been developed with a focus on low distortion and control, even when the music places high demands on the speaker’s dynamics. 

Horn technology with magnesium and beryllium

A compression driver with a 4-inch magnesium diaphragm works together with a SonoGlass horn integrated into the curved front baffle. The shape of the horn controls the dispersion of the sound and is a central part of both the speaker’s acoustics and its distinctive look.

The highest frequencies are reproduced by a separate compression driver with a 1-inch beryllium diaphragm. It has its own SonoGlass horn mounted in a die-cast aluminum housing and extends the speaker’s frequency range to 50 kHz. 

Separate crossovers with battery biasing

The three frequency sections have separate crossover boards. A 9 V battery biases the capacitors to reduce distortion in the crossover. The battery does not power the speaker, but is part of the crossover design. JBL Project K2 S9900 is a passive speaker connected to an external amplifier, and the terminals allow for bi-wiring. 

A cabinet where form and function meet

The cabinet’s curved front and back give the speaker a sculptural appearance. Internally, extensive bracing helps limit vibrations and unwanted coloration of the sound. Together with the integrated horn, this makes the cabinet an active part of the acoustic design – not just a frame around the drivers.
