Ediscreation Firebird Black LPS – linear power supply with a focus on calm and stability

Ediscreation Firebird Black LPS is a linear power supply for anyone with a streamer, DAC, network switch, router, phono stage, or other compatible hi-fi equipment with an external DC power supply who wants to further improve the power feeding the component. Instead of a regular switch-mode adapter, you get a solution where Ediscreation has placed great emphasis on regulation, transformer design, power reserve, and mechanical construction.

Firebird Black uses a fully discrete circuit design, dual regulation, and 30,000 µF Mundorf capacitors, while a custom-made isolation transformer plays a central role in the power supply. It is a solution for the music lover who already has the most important components in place and now wants to give the power supply the same attention as the rest of the system.

When a linear power supply becomes part of the system

What we particularly find interesting about the Ediscreation Firebird Black LPS is that the power supply has been treated as an independent hi-fi component rather than simply a replacement for the adapter that came with the equipment. The regulation is built using discrete components and combined with a dual regulator design.

In addition, there are 30,000 µF Mundorf capacitors, which form part of the power supply’s energy reserve. Ediscreation states ripple and noise at 0.02 mVrms measured from 20 Hz to 20 MHz. The goal of the design is to provide the connected electronics with a stable DC supply, a low noise level, and good electrical operating conditions.

The entire power path has been considered

Firebird Black uses a custom-made grounded isolation transformer, and Ediscreation states that the AC transformer is EN61558 certified. On the circuit board, you will find the manufacturer’s Silent Start grounding design, and the power supply has separate output channels.

According to Ediscreation, each finished Firebird Black undergoes both full load testing and noise measurement before delivery. A handmade 1.5 meter OFC DC cable is included, so the connection to compatible equipment has been considered as part of the solution.

As with any external power supply, it is important to check voltage, polarity, connector type, and current requirements before connecting the equipment.

The mechanical construction has also received attention

Firebird Black is built in a CNC-milled chassis made of solid 6061 aluminum, which Ediscreation has chosen with the aim of reducing electromagnetic interference and mechanical vibrations. The chassis uses a floating suspension between the main section and the base plate, while the manufacturer’s Ripple Base 035 feet are fitted underneath the power supply.

At 10 kg, this is a genuine hi-fi component rather than a power supply simply meant to be hidden away behind the rack. On the front, an analog voltmeter makes it possible to monitor the voltage, and the backlighting can be switched off during listening.

Ediscreation itself describes the result as a quieter background and less tonal noise. To us, Firebird Black is particularly interesting because regulation, power reserve, grounding, and mechanical construction have been conceived together as parts of the same solution.
