Dynaudio Contour 20i - Compact speaker with goosebump-inducing realism

The new Contour 20i is designed to surpass every other standmount Contour model Dynaudio has created, and it succeeds. The new Esotar 2i tweeter is a turbocharged version of the much-loved Esotar2. It has now been given a larger rear chamber with more effective damping, and the ingenious internal Hexis dome seen in the reference series Confidence, Core and more. Together, they smooth out the frequency response and reduce unwanted resonances for even clearer, smoother treble.

The bass has also been fine-tuned. It is still made from Dynaudio's own Magnesium Silicate Polymer (MSP) material, a lightweight aluminium voice coil, and a ventilated double ferrite magnet system. The new feature behind the bass is the completely new asymmetric spider, which is made of aramid fibres that improve the acoustic response. The fibres themselves vary in width, and the result is even finer control over the cone's excursion. You will be surprised by the sonic difference such a small change can make. It has to be heard before you can understand it.

Flat frequency response

And because those driver changes provide an inherently flat frequency response, we’ve been able to simplify the crossover too. It’s a thing of beauty, isn’t it? There’s no longer any need for extra impedance-correction circuitry – which means an even more direct signal path. And cleaner sound.

Making a Contour without its signature baffle would be like making a car without wheels. Unthinkable. But there’s always room for improvement – and our designers love to stretch their legs. This baffle is aluminium, and set into the cabinet. Its chamfer is included in the driver’s basket – which not only looks great, but also reduces unwanted high-frequency diffraction effects for clearer treble, and provides a solid foundation for the drivers to do their work. A solid foundation means improved high-volume performance at low frequencies, too (although your neighbours might not thank us for that).

Improved crossover

The improved crossover no longer needs impedance correction circuitry to optimise its performance – that’s all now done in the driver itself, simply down to the physical properties of the materials we use. Fewer components, cleaner signal path, better performance.

While our engineers and designers were hunkered down listening to everything from jazz, to classical, to metal, to electronica, the team in our on-site factory were scouring sustainable sources for high-quality materials and finishes. They make sure all Contours are furniture-grade: perfectly built, perfectly finished and perfectly packaged.
