Børresen M6 - An ultra high-end floorstanding speaker with a huge soundstage

Inspired by the legendary M1 speaker, the M6 is a natural extension of Børresen’s successful design philosophy, which is both aesthetically appealing and exceptionally great-sounding. 3D-printed basket in zirconium
The M6 speaker’s basket is a true revolution – it is a topology-optimized 3D-printed basket made of zirconium, ensuring maximum rigidity and therefore minimum vibration and resonance. The basket is not just a holder for the diaphragm, because the energy generated by the diaphragm is also absorbed by the structure behind it. The goal was therefore to eliminate noise from the basket by designing a basket with maximum rigidity. Studies were carried out using computer-optimized finite element design, resulting in a topology-optimized 3D-printed basket made from exclusive zirconium.
Børresen has not only designed a basket with extreme rigidity - they have also added important factors such as enormous internal damping and resonance control, resulting in extreme clarity in overall performance. Thanks to the 3D printing process, the cavities are filled with zirconium powder, giving the basket additional damping properties. Zirconium is by far the best choice of material, as it allows the basket to generate an incredibly natural sound.
A bass/midrange diaphragm with maximum rigidity and minimal noise
The diaphragm is designed to achieve maximum rigidity with minimal noise. The diaphragm for the M6 is the most advanced and sophisticated speaker diaphragm on the market. The M6 diaphragm has the highest rigidity and the lowest diaphragm resonance. The technological requirements for this unmatched, world-class diaphragm performance made it necessary to design, develop, and assemble all components in-house. Michael Børresen and his team had to construct a large number of different variants and models until they achieved their uncompromising goal of ultimate diaphragm performance for a previously unheard-of level of sound quality.
The result is a diaphragm consisting of four laminate layers for a single driver: two layers of spread tow carbon fiber, a layer of aramid honeycomb in between, and a titanium layer with Ansuz Supreme coating.
The combination of all these materials gives this state-of-the-art diaphragm its unique properties. Spread tow carbon fiber is designed to ensure a skin with optimal rigidity in many different directions. This unique characteristic reduces sound-disturbing vibrations and resonances to a previously unseen low level. This also applies to resonances in the frequency range above 8 kHz. Since the diaphragm/speaker is used up to the 2.5 kHz range, disturbing resonances have been moved two octaves outside the effective frequency range, ensuring an absolute minimum of resonances. Aramid honeycomb also has the best stiffness-to-weight ratio in the vertical direction.
Titanium has perfect resonance-control properties and supports a natural, organic sound from the diaphragm. With the Ansuz Supreme coating, the diaphragm skin is further acoustically optimized. This coating is applied to the titanium skin in a Hi-PIMS (High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering) machine to create the finest and most uniform layer of zirconium, followed by a layer of tungsten and finished with a layer of aluminum chromium nitride. This coating gives the music truly impeccable sound quality.
An iron-free magnet system with silver
The patented Børresen iron-free magnetic system has been further refined. Børresen uses iron-free drivers in all of its speakers. Their inductance is approximately ten times lower than that of conventional drivers. This extremely low inductance has now been further reduced to an unprecedented new minimum level – approximately 12 times lower than the inductance level of conventional iron-based drivers. This is because silver has 6-8% better conductivity than copper, and Børresen has replaced the copper pole rings with in-house manufactured handcrafted silver rings.
To take full advantage of all the performance-enhancing sonic properties of the Børresen M-series, all other metal parts of these premium speakers also undergo cryogenic treatment. This reduces their inductance by a further 6-8%. The result is complete musical purity. With their unadulterated authenticity of music reproduction, these premium speakers set a new and unmatched standard – clarity, refinement, and imaging at its absolute best.
Cryogenically treated for a tremendous improvement
Cryogenic treatment of all metal parts of the speaker results in a further significant improvement in conductivity – thereby releasing the finest and most subtle musical details. When metal parts undergo cryogenic treatment, they are exposed to extreme cooling. In the wake of this process, the metal structure contracts more and more. Alloying elements are pushed out of the grain structure of the metal, which now becomes much more like a monocrystal. These structural changes in the metal have a profound effect on its sonic properties, resulting in an increase in conductivity of 6-8%.
All metal parts of these speaker series undergo cryogenic treatment. The cryogenic treatment cycle requires a time window of 3 days. During the first 24 hours, the metal undergoes a cooling process from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures. During the next 24 hours, the metal parts are kept at temperatures around -196°C (-321°F) before the temperature, over the following 24 hours, gradually returns to room temperature. The gradual cooling and heating are crucial to avoid thermal stress. The process strengthens and compresses the grain structure of the metal parts and reduces the inherent residual stress that occurs when metal solidifies from its liquid phase to a solid phase.
Børresen tweeter with extraordinary efficiency
Elaborate finite element methods have been used to linearize and optimize the magnetic flux field in order to facilitate driver movement and ensure high efficiency and exceptional linearity.
The efficiency of this closed ribbon tweeter amounts to an extraordinary 94dB and operates from approximately 2.5 kHz and upward. The moving mass is extremely low at 0.01 grams. The fully concealed tweeter has the capacity to operate at incredible speed, which is an absolute prerequisite for unlocking the most subtle and refined sound details from any kind of music. The enormous robustness of this tweeter allows it to handle extremely high transient peaks without any ear-fatiguing interruptions. No transformers are used.
Series connection for a coherent system
Børresen speakers are equipped with a series-connection configuration. The reason for this is that drivers share the same electric current in the crossover region. As a result, the electric current is phase-locked across the crossover region. Unlike standard parallel filtering, where each driver receives its own frequency and phase content, the new series filters work by redirecting out-of-band currents around the existing currents, creating a much more coherent system. This unmatched and innovative technological approach takes your music to a new echelon of acoustic delight.
For the crossover filter, Børresen has also gone to great lengths to find the best and most sophisticated state-of-the-art components. The coils are foil types wound with paper insulation and impregnated with resin under vacuum to make them mechanically extremely solid and stable.
For crossover capacitors, several rows of small military-spec stacked foil types have been used. They have the best mechanical stability and the lowest induction of any type of capacitor on the market (and they sound wonderful too). For tweeter attenuation resistors, metal strip types are used, as they have by far the lowest noise figures and additionally very low thermal variation.
A redesigned and reinforced cabinet
The design is an evolution and optimization of Børresen’s fantastic 0-series cabinet. To ensure even higher performance, the M6 cabinet is constructed with an additional 5 mm of reinforced, block-milled, pressed wood structures. In addition, braces are built into the sides of the speaker to provide the cabinet with even more rigidity and mechanical stability. The tweeter and bass sections are equipped with matched terminals to ensure the highest efficiency. The cabinet is finished in black piano lacquer.
Internal cabinet M – Improves balance
The larger cabinet has also improved the ventilation behind the bass/midrange nozzles. This results in less compression and thus a much faster and more agile speaker driver, which has a significantly positive impact on the overall soundstage. In addition, the bass is equipped with a bass reflex section inside the cabinet, ensuring a dynamic and harmonious balance between midrange and bass.
M6 driver configuration
M6 is equipped with 6 unique 4.5″ M-series drivers. The drivers are connected in series in pairs, so that two drivers function as a bass/midrange and four drivers function as a bass unit. This approach ultimately results in increased speed, precision, and depth, enriching the speaker with far more musicality.
Bi-amping
M6 offers the option of bi-amping, allowing you to drive the bass and midrange/tweeter sections individually. This not only provides sufficient power to each section, but also results in a cleaner, more precise sound.
These speakers are designed with two types of bi-amping in mind. The first is speaker-crossover bi-amping. The frequency between the bass section and the midrange/tweeter section is optimized in accordance with the M3 and M6 design, so it delivers the best performance.
The second option is active crossover bi-amping, where you can adjust the crossover frequency yourself. This type of crossover is the optimal solution for fine-tuning your speakers according to the acoustic properties of your listening room, allowing you to control the amount of bass and the balance between bass and midrange/tweeter. To further improve your listening experience, Børresen’s sister company, Aavik Acoustics, has developed a high-end Analog Active Filter that works seamlessly with these new speaker models and delivers the ultimate in precision and clarity.
