Pro-Ject Xtension 9 Evolution – superlative vinyl performance in standard rack size
The Xtension 9 Evolution is a compact, top-shelf reference turntable, hand-built in Europe.
It brings together Pro-Ject's best construction tricks in a cabinet that fits in standard hi-fi racks. The heavy, resonance-dead construction, 9" carbon tonearm and electronic 33/45 speed provide a calm, dynamic and extremely quiet playback foundation.
Highlights
- Heavy sandwich platter: 5.4 kg/Ø300 mm aluminum with TPE damping and vinyl top layer for optimal contact.
- Magnetically supported main bearing: inverted ceramic ball bearing reduces friction, noise and resonances to an absolute minimum.
- EVO 9” CC tonearm: one-piece carbon arm with gimbal/ABEC-7 bearings and TPE-damped counterweight.
- Magnetic feet: powerful neodymium feet make the player “float” and effectively disengage from the surface.
- Electronic Speed & Precision Motor Control: DC-powered AC generator for stable speed; 33/45 rpm at the touch of a button.
- Quiet, resonance-free base: CNC-milled MDF without cavities – partially filled with steel pellets for central gravity point and extra mass.
Technology and sound
The core of the Xtension 9 Evolution is the magnet-supported bearing construction: the heavy platter rests on an inverted ceramic ball, while magnets relieve the bearing. The result is extremely low mechanical noise and silky-smooth rotation.
The sandwich platter combines aluminum, TPE damping and a top layer of “melted vinyl” – the most natural contact surface for your LP. Together with the included Record Puck, the record is securely clamped and unwanted micro-vibrations are tamed.
The EVO 9" CC carbon tonearm provides low mass, high stiffness and precise tracking control via gimbal/ABEC-7 bearings, while the motor is controlled by a DC-powered AC generator that locks speed electronically - easily switch between 33/45 rpm on the front.
Design, use and finish
The chassis is CNC-milled MDF without cavities and partially filled with steel balls, which both increases the mass (16 kg total) and creates a central center of gravity that absorbs plinth and bearing noise.
The magnetic suspension feet are implemented layer-by-layer with neodymium magnets, TPE damping and o-rings, so that the player is effectively decoupled from the rack.
